Sedalia Cattleman Chosen for National Beef Checkoff Post

Sedalia beef cattle producer David Dick was chosen vice chairman of the Federation of State Beef Councils during the 2010 annual Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show, held recently in San Antonio.

Dick, who owns a cow/calf operation and custom hay harvesting business in the Sedalia area, will serve a one-year term with the Federation, comprised of the 45 state beef councils that collect the $1 beef checkoff. In this position, he will also serve as one of 10 volunteer leaders representing the states perspective on the 20-member Beef Promotion Operating Committee (BPOC). The BPOC decides the final annual budget and program priorities for national beef checkoff efforts. The beef checkoff, part of the 1985 Farm Bill, collects $1 per-head on domestic and imported beef animals and beef products. The monies are used for beef research, consumer education and promotion at state and national levels.

Dick has served as president of the Pettis County Cattlemen's Association, secretary/treasurer and seedstock council chairman for the Missouri Cattlemen's Association, and chairman of the Missouri Beef Industry Council.

On the national level, Dick is a former Region III Vice President and is currently chair of the checkoff's Public Opinion-Issues Management Group. He formerly chaired the checkoff nutrition and health committee and was a member of the producer communications committee from 1997 - 2003.

Within his community, Dick is chairman of the Pettis County Soil & Water Conservation District, president of the State Fair FFA Alumni Association and general livestock superintendent and beef cattle superintendent for the Missouri State Fair.
